WHAT IS “TUFTING”?

WHAT IS “TUFTING”?

If you read our newsletters or peruse our catalogs, you come across the words “tufted” or “tufting” quite often. And while it’s recognizable in the furniture industry, most people don’t exactly understand the purpose or complexity behind it. So let’s pull back the curtain a bit and talk about “tufting”.

Tufting is sewing incorporated into a cushion. It came about in the 1700’s and is still in use today. Typically, it utilizes sewing buttons in a diamond pattern, like the below booth.

The diamond pattern button is one of the upholstery innovations that never faded away. Tufting is created by using a diamond button assembly that is pushed into leather, fabric, or vinyl upholstered foam or cushion creating beautiful and uniquely made lines, shapes, and folding material and foam.

All of our upholstery professionals have years of experience in tufting. The tufting is all hand done. They put passion into each button and fabric fold, so the end result will be beautiful and elegant.

Our booths are made with love and attention to detail. Each tufted booth that leaves our shop door is ready to transform the space of your dreams. Additionally, our tufted booths are built to last in your commercial setting.

Tufting doesn’t need to use buttons or be in a diamond shape. At Soft Touch Furniture, we regularly utilize different types of tufting depending on the look our customer wants and the intended use. See the below vertical channel tufting? Looks really nice, right? The straight vertical lines give it a more contemporary look, while still retaining classic charm. And yes, it’s super comfortable.

One of the benefits of being a custom furniture manufacturer is we get to incorporate our client’s desires into our designs. And that extends to tufting.

Almost all of the tufting you see is in a diamond, square, or vertical pattern. But once in a while, an establishment’s look calls for horizontal lines. So guess what we did…

That’s pretty neat, isn’t it? It looks really nice, and it’s very functional as well. Darn comfy too!

So there you have it – a primer on tufting. The next time you’re out and about, pay attention to the furniture in the restaurants and other establishments you visit, and see how much tufting is out there. You’ll be surprised at how popular it really is.
